First ultrasound

As soon as we got back from our holiday, we booked an appointment with our doctor to confirm the good news.

Our doctor wasn’t nearly as skeptical as us about the results of our multiple positive pregnancy tests. “I think you’re probably pregnant,” he said, matter-of-factly.

So onto the ultrasound.

A word of advice to first-time fathers: It’s very difficult to see anything on ultrasound, particularly early ones (where you don’t see anything) or late ones (where you only see small bits and pieces of the baby at any time). It’s the ones in the middle, where you can see the whole baby, that are the most amazing.

But that would come later. For now, as we stared into what looked like a TV test pattern, the doctor paused. “See that?” he said, pointing out a few flashing pixels. “That’s your baby.”

And now, for the first time, I really believed it.

And so it begins…

There are certain moments you remember vividly. Finding out that you’re pregnant is one of them.

We were halfway through our Asian vacation, staying at a hotel in Penang, Malaysia. Relaxing by the beach after dinner, Aude said, “I’d better have one more cocktail, because I don’t know when I’ll be able to have the next one.” Turns out her words were prophetic.

The next morning, there were the results. We couldn’t believe the good news. We didn’t believe the good news. I think it was only after taking about four pregnancy tests that it finally sunk in, and even then, we were still a little in shock.

It’s a understatement to say that it was the highlight of our vacation. It also gave us plenty to talk about, plenty of dreams to share, and lots of planning to do for the rest of the trip.
